Abortion Resources
There are two main ways abortion can be done: an abortion procedure (also called "in-clinic abortion" or "surgical abortion") and the abortion pill (also called "medication abortion"). Both are safe and effective.
A safe, self-managed abortion using pills is currently an option in all 50 states. Resources vary by location, so use the sites linked below to find the most up-to-date information on how people are accessing abortion pills in your state.
Right now, even in states that do not offer telehealth abortion, some people are using alternate routes to access abortion pills online, then contacting M+A Hotline (or other hotlines) to learn how to use the pills themselves for a medically safe, self-managed abortion. Some people even choose to self-manage their abortion in states where telehealth is offered.
The “abortion pill" or "abortion with pills” is a modern option for ending an early pregnancy safely and effectively. It is also called "medication abortion." It uses two kinds of pills: mifepristone and misoprostol (or misoprostol only, if mifepristone is not available). Using abortion pills does not require the presence of a doctor. Some people find and take the medications safely on their own. This is called self-managed abortion.

What is the abortion pill? The "abortion pill" is actually five pills, taken one or two days apart. The abortion pill is a combination of two medications: mifepristone and misoprostol. These medications stop a pregnancy from growing. They cause cramping and bleeding to empty the uterus. It is similar to having a miscarriage. It is also known as "medication abortion."

How often is it used? It's been used by millions around the world for the past 30 years. Abortion with pills is common in the United States where more than 54% of abortions are done with pills. It's even more common worldwide: in some European countries up to 90% of abortions are done using pills.
-
Are abortion pills safe? They're medically safe and effective for pregnancies up to 11 weeks. Abortion pills have been FDA-approved for more than 20 years. They are safer than taking Tylenol. Studies show them to be 98% effective at ending a pregnancy. Buying and using abortion pills without going to a clinic may have legal risks.
